Ubisoft Is ‘Mismanaged, Shareholders Are Hostages’: Investor Demands Video Game Company Go Private After Stock Drop – Tencent Holdings (OTC:TCEHY), Ubisoft (OTC:UBSFF)

Ubisoft Faces Shareholder Pressure Amid Star Wars Outlaws Woes

Ubisoft Entertainment SA, the renowned video game developer and publisher, is facing mounting pressure from a minority shareholder to go private, following the underwhelming performance of its highly anticipated title, Star Wars Outlaws. Slovakia-based hedge fund AJ Investments, which holds less than 1% of Ubisoft's stock, has issued an open letter to the company's board of directors, criticizing the management's recent decisions and the declining share value.

Unlocking Ubisoft's Potential: A Shareholder's Perspective

Dissecting the Star Wars Outlaws Debacle

The release of Star Wars Outlaws, developed by Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment studio, was expected to bolster the company's financial outlook. However, the game's early reviews and lukewarm reception from players have raised concerns. Within two days of the game's launch, Ubisoft's stock price plummeted by over 10%, reaching its lowest level since 2014, with a market capitalization of 1.97 billion euros. The sharp decline in share price has only continued, with the stock closing 7.1% lower on Monday, September 9, at 13.67 euros, and currently trading at 13.25 euros.

Questioning Ubisoft's Management Strategies

In its open letter, AJ Investments has accused Ubisoft's management of being "mismanaged" and claimed that shareholders are "hostages of Guillemot family members and Tencent," who are allegedly taking advantage of them. The fund has criticized the management's focus on "pleasing investors with beating quarterly results" rather than "focusing on long-term strategy to provide exceptional experience for the gamers."

Broader Concerns Beyond Star Wars Outlaws

AJ Investments' criticism extends beyond the performance of Star Wars Outlaws. The fund has also raised concerns about the management of several other Ubisoft projects, including the free-to-play shooter XDefiant, which is struggling to gain traction. Additionally, the investor noted the delays in the release of Skull and Bones and the cancellation of The Division Heartland. The letter further expressed concerns about the lack of progress in long-dormant franchises like Rayman, Splinter Cell, For Honor, and Watch Dogs.

A Glimmer of Hope: Rainbow Six Siege's Success

Amidst the criticism, AJ Investments did acknowledge the success of Ubisoft's live service game, Rainbow Six Siege, stating that it "is doing great." This recognition suggests that the fund sees potential in Ubisoft's ability to deliver successful and engaging gaming experiences, provided the company addresses the concerns raised in the open letter.

Ubisoft's Response and Future Expectations

Ubisoft has yet to publicly respond to the letter or comment on the performance of Star Wars Outlaws. Earlier this year, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that the company had a "solid" start to its financial year and expressed confidence in its upcoming releases, including Star Wars Outlaws. However, the recent developments have cast doubt on the company's ability to deliver on its promises. As Ubisoft navigates this challenging period, the pressure from AJ Investments and the potential for a "proxy fight" to push for a sale of the company will undoubtedly shape the future direction of the gaming giant. The success or failure of upcoming releases, such as Assassin's Creed Shadows, scheduled for November, will be crucial in determining Ubisoft's ability to regain the trust of its shareholders and secure its long-term viability in the highly competitive video game industry.
